Past progressive (definition= 2):
We use it show background of past story or news.
Construction: subject + was/were + verb 1st form + ing + object
  • It was raining when present arrived president.
  • Photographers were taking picture when Salman khan comes into the arena
  • People were watching when police apprehended robbers.
